Fitting Keith Mainland's belt guard on an F3 LTD

These instructions are based on a 2017 F3 Ltd but should match other models.

Before you start, you'll need:

  • Loctite blue
  • 3M double-sided tape (optional but recommended)

1. Remove belt cover

The belt cover is held in place with three bolts.  The front one (green) simply screws into the swinging arm but the back two (red) have 10mm bolts on that back that require a spanner to stop them turning.

2. 10mm bolt replacement clips

The two 10mm bolts mentioned above are quite difficult to reach, but fortunately Keith has provided a replacement for these to make reassembly much easier.  fit the two metal clips provided with the threads on the inside (wheel side).

3. Get the belt guard in position

Get the belt guard over the belt and between the wheel and the belt, I found it easiest to do closer to the front and then slide it back.

To make it easier to hold in place while putting the screws etc. I stuck a piece of 3M double-sided tape along the top slightly in from the edge:

Position the mount, so it lined up with the bolt holes, the double-sided tape will hold it in position.  You don't have to use double-sided tape and can just hold it in place, I just found it easier to fit using it.

4. Test fit

Without fitting the original belt cover, the three bolts back in and tighten so the guard is in the correct position:

Check the gap between the guard, wheel and belt, if it needs adjustment slightly loosen the two 8mm bolts that hold the guard to the bracket and adjust and then tighten again.

Take the Spyder for a shot test ride just to make sure the positioning is correct.

Once you're happy tighten the two 8mm locking nuts on the top of the bracket, these are hard to reach without a long reach socket so may be easier to do during the final fit.

5. Final fit

Remove the three main bolts holding the guard in place again.

If needed, pull down the guard so you can tighten the two 8mm locking nuts mentioned above.

Add Loctite to the three bolts, this is particularly important as we're no longer using lock nuts on the rear bolts.

Position the belt guard and original belt covers and bolt back in place.

Recheck the gap between belt, guard and wheel to make sure it's still ok.
